A Magic Classical Music Roller Coaster Ride (video)

by Trent Gilliss, senior editor

Isolate the musical notes of the first violin playing the fourth movement of Ferdinand Ries’ second symphony. Then create a visualization that gives the most untrained ear an idea of the sweeping undulations and dynamic energy of the German composer’s piece. What you get is this smart, real-time look at the Zurich Chamber Orchestra (Zürcher Kammer Orchester) in the shape of a roller coaster:

“The camera starts by showing a close-up of the score, then focuses on the notes of the first violin turning the staves into the winding rail tracks of the rollercoaster. The notes and bars were exactly synchronised with the progression in the animation so that the typical movements of a rollercoaster ride match the dramatic composition of the music.”

I know I already reblogged a post about it, but I just want to make a more formal one, I guess.

I just discovered Emotional Baggage Check, and I already love it! You can either “check in” your baggage by writing a post venting about whatever happens to be bothering you (it can be about anything) and submitting it, or you can “carry” someone else’s baggage by receiving a post of someone else’s problems, and sending them a song of your choice as well as a personal message. All you need is an e-mail to check in.

This is a lovely tool for getting things off your chest, and for reaching out to someone you might not have ever been able to help otherwise. Not to mention I’m a huge sucker for the power of music!

This is amazing.

I just got “watching kids” as someone’s baggage. ok? i’m sending them Enter the Ninja.

Corbis Film Preservation Facility Iron Mountain Boyers, Pennsylvania

Occupying 10,000 square feet of a 1,000-acre abandoned limestone mine, the Corbis photo locker is currently kept at 45 degrees Fahrenheit and 37 percent relative humidity. The cold, dry conditions prevent deterioration of the photos and film negatives that Corbis has collected over the years, including images of the Wright brothers, Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue, and Rosa Parks seated in the front of a bus. (Iron Mountain is also the federal government’s Noah’s Ark, where all the special people get to relocate when that asteroid comes screaming through the troposphere.) After Corbis finishes cataloging its 20 million photos, the temperature of the archives will be dropped to –4 degrees. That should keep the fathers of flight picture-perfect for the next 2,000 years.

Faith-Restoring Follow Up of the Day: In light of Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten’s refusal to grant what is, for all intents and purposes, the dying wish of 6-year-old cancer patient Enzo, not one but two Food Network chefs have come forward to offer their services in her stead.

Beau “BeauMac” MacMillan and Iron Chef Michael Symon have each extended an offer to cook with Enzo. BeauMac told TMZ that he has invited Enzo and his entire family to Arizona for a stay at a fancy resort and a meal at his 5-star restaurant, Camelback Mountain, which Enzo can help prepare.

Symon, who will be visiting Oregon, Enzo’s home state, in the near future, said he would drop by and “cook a dish” with the young gourmand.

WHAT THE FUCK INA!? WHAT THE FUCK?!

COSIGNED ON THE WHAT THE FUCK INA?

Also omg Camelback Mountain is so fancy

I knew I had a better reason to hate her besides the fact that she’s annoying as fuck.

Cameras cleverly disguised as lumps of snow were able to catch some rare and amazing photos and vid of these endangered polar bears.

They almost went by unnoticed ‘til one Polar Bear destroyed $200,000 worth of camera equipment (the whole thing was caught on photo and video).

Street Art of the Day: Last month, children’s author Aaron Zenz sat down to watch Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop with his kids.

10-year-old Gracie was so inspired by the film, that she immediately declared her determination to become a street artist when she grew up. Her dad explained to her that “while the art was fun and the story was great, vandalism isn’t a good thing.” So all together they came up with a project that was artsy, stealthy, public, “and in no way damaging”:

I bought a big sack of rocks, washed them, and painted the base colors.  Then Isaac, Gracie, Lily, and I each claimed a color and decorated them with as many faces and expressions as we could thing of.  48 rocks in all. […]

Hopefully we were able to spread a little happiness to anyone who stumbled across these little guys.
